Zine Night at Communitywise!
Run by local artists/activists Jace Autumn and Bree Gardner, this group is a biweekly anti-oppression zine creation night!
Our first night will be a community-style meeting, meant to engage with community on what they would like to see/participate in with our zine nights!
We will have a brief introduction to zine culture (with specific focus on it's queer history) and how-to guide. We are open to all queer, trans, nonbinary, agender, genderqueer, two spirit, indigenous people and people of colour. We want to hear what you want to see/read/create, as well as any concerns/barriers you or your community may have in attending this night. No art/zine experience is required.
We are aiming to create a safer space for marginalized individuals and communities to express their experiences and identities. Both facilitators will be available for private communications both in-person and online.
Community Wise is a semi-accessible space. Our current location is up one flight of stairs and does not have ramp/elevator access. The room itself is on the second floor with windows and gender neutral washrooms. More accessible space is currently trying to be made available - however if you are interested in the event but cannot physically attend, online submissions will be accepted and integration into the group via skype/messaging will be made as easy as possible for you. Our first meeting will be taking place outside if weather permits, allowing for better accessibility. ASL interpretation will be provided if desired, as well as verbal translation into Arabic.
Additionally this is an all-ages space. Youth and seniors are welcomed for their varied life experience and identities. Childcare is not currently provided however you are welcome to bring your children to intermingle - we are working on childcare options for future events.
Ongoing and consistent participation is not a requirement, however we would love to see everyone come and contribute both to individual zine projects and a monthly publication through Bree and Jace on multiple zine nights!
Supplies will be provided, however we encourage you to bring your own should you have access to them! Juice and Water will be provided, with hopes to also provide food in following nights.
We are interested in all forms of visual arts! Poetry, native-plant recipes, images, photography, comics, and others are all exhilarating options for submissions. No formal art/zine experience is required.
Come have fun with us and bring your friends!
